Feb. 15, 2008 (China Knowledge) - China's telecom providers have suffered a severe loss of at least RMB 1.1 billion (US$152.8 million) in the biggest series of snowstorms in 50 years that jeopardized the country, said the Ministry of Information Industry (MOII).

The harsh weather has caused disruption of the operations of 24,000 base stations for mobile phone service, of which 10,000 were completely shut down.

Meanwhile, the fixed-line network was greatly damaged as well. 150,000 poles have collapsed, and 16,000 kilometers (10,000 miles) of telephone wires have been damaged.

As of Feb 12, the Chinese telecom industry has paid out a total of RMB 860 million and has dispatched emergency teams amounting to 900,000 people repairing damaged communications facilities. However, around 18,000 base stations still cannot operate as usual amid the power blackouts, and 7.5 million mobile and fixed-line phone subscribers were out of service so far.

The number of affected base stations is expected to decline steadily as power supply gradually resumes in the coming weeks, according to MOII.
