SOA said the delightful surge was boosted mainly by the traditional industries of transport, tourism and fishing, which together contributed more than 80% of total output value.

However, emerging sectors also saw a rapid growth last year, said SOA spokesman Li Haiqing.

The gross production value of oceanic biological pharmaceutical industry surged more than 37% from a year ago to hit RMB 4 billion in 2007.

In addition, with some new findings including the detection of the Jidong Nanpu Oilfield, with reserves of almost 1.2 billion tons of oil, marine drilling and oil and gas production generated about RMB 77 billion, up 17% from 2006.
